“The ship’s team members spotted the two men off the coast of Isla Mujeres, Mexico, and quickly rescued them,” according to Carnival. From Seattle, the ship will offer round-trip 7-night sailings visiting top Alaskan ports of call and scenic Inside Passage cruising. Because Carnival Spirit was sailing a day at sea, there will be no delay to the remainder of the current itinerary, as lost time can easily be made up with a slight increase in speed. The ship’s officers contacted Coast Guard officials from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic to coordinate the refugees’ transfer to the proper authorities. All members of the group were checked by the ship’s medical personnel and found to be in good condition. As is standard procedure, they would also have been provided with food and water as needed. Jubilee, the newest ship in Carnival’s fleet, is currently sailing a week-long Western Caribbean itinerary, according to CruiseMapper.

The captain received an emergency alert about the stranded men and immediately steered the ship towards them — and away from its planned course — to save them. The cruise ship then continued with its voyage — heading to Mahogany Bay, Roatan which it visited on Tuesday. According to a release, the the two men were stranded in a kayak in the Gulf of Mexico after their boat sank, and they used the kayak to stay afloat.

It's been a week since the incident, and Grimes said the experience has opened his eyes. While dressing in a pair of pants he planned to wear on the cruise, Grimes said he found a fortune cookie fortune in the pants pocket that read "Life's a beach. Enjoy the waves." At some point, Grimes said he thought he saw the fin of a shark, kicking at something that bumped into his leg. Coast Guard officers who later saved him, aviation survival technician Richard Hoefle, told CBS News he believes Grimes "had about 30 seconds to a minute left before we would have lost him." The 28-year-old from Lafayette, Alabama, was with 18 relatives on a Carnival cruise to Cozumel, Mexico, when somehow, he ended up overboard after a day of fun. The dramatic rescue was filmed by a Carnival Vista passenger who posted the clip to TikTok.

"When I came to, regained consciousness, I was in the water with no boat in sight," he said. "I can't float myself, even when I'm trying to. So there had to be ... the Lord was with me while I was out there because something was holding me up the whole time I was passed out." The crew on the Jubilee transferred the men to a Mexican Navy vessel shortly after the rescue. Carnival's Care Team is "providing support to the family members of the missing guest who were sailing with him and remain on board," Lupoli said.
"The fall didn't kill me and the sea creatures didn't eat me. I felt like I was meant to get out here." As time passed and the sun began to set, Grimes said the water started getting colder. Carnival said the Jubilee is proceeding with its regular schedule and will visit Mahogany Bay, Roatan on Tuesday. "We greatly appreciate the efforts of all, most especially the U.S. Coast Guard and the mariner who spotted the guest in the water," Lupoli told CBS News.

The most recent Carnival ship rescue was just over two weeks ago, when Carnival Valor rescued three men from a small boat on March 26, 2023. In that incident, the cruise ship was alerted to the situation by the United States Coast Guard due to an emergency signal the three boaters were able to use. Carnival Spirit departed Miami on Saturday, April 8, and had already called on Half Moon Cay, the cruise line’s private island destination in The Bahamas, as well as Grand Turk, prior to Tuesday’s rescue. On Wednesday, the ship will visit Aruba, followed by Bonaire on Thursday, before two more sea days bring her back to Miami on Sunday, April 16. Carnival officers aboard the ship spotted the men on a bright orange, reflective life raft through the darkness of the early morning and brought them aboard the ship.

The operation occurred on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 as the 2,680-passenger vessel was passing between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico on an eight-night itinerary based out of Miami, Florida. So far this year, Carnival cruise ships have assisted in eight rescues involving vessels in distress at sea, the company told Insider. “The ship’s team and Carnival’s Fleet Operation Center staff in Miami kept in close contact with Mexican Navy officials and arranged a transfer, which was completed shortly after the rescue,” the news release said. The men ended up in the middle of the ocean after their boat sank, and they relied on a kayak for survival. They received first aid, food and a medical evaluation once they were safely aboard the cruise ship.

Carnival Spirit has rescued two dozen people from a small boat in distress, but is able to make up time without altering its itinerary. Carnival Jubilee’s crew discovered the two men off the coast of Mexico’s Isla Mujeres. Crew on the Carnival Vista ship rescued six men who were floating on a life raft in the dark ocean off the Dominican Republic on Dec. 13. The 133,500-gross-ton cruise ship can welcome 3,934 passengers aboard at double occupancy, or as many as 4,977 guests when fully booked with all berths filled. The ship is currently sailing a 6-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary, having departed Port Canaveral, Florida on Sunday, December 10. The ship has already visited Nassau, and is visiting Amber Cove on Wednesday, just hours after the rescue.
In May, Carnival Breeze rescued 17 people from a capsized craft near Belize, while in March, Carnival Valor had a similar rescue of three stranded boaters nearly 400 miles offshore of Alabama. Carnival Sunrise and Carnival Spirit have likewise made rescues in 2023, as have other cruise ships. Before sunrise on Wednesday, December 13, Carnival Vista rescued six men on a life raft. Carnival Cruise Line’s Fleet Operations Center in Miami had received an emergency alert, and reached out to Carnival Vista as close to the reported location.
One person off-camera can be heard exclaiming how “insane” the experience was in the video. Carnival Jubilee proceeded with its regular schedule and will visit Mahogany Bay, Roatan on Tuesday. On Thursday, Carnival Vista will visit Grand Turk, before returning to Port Canaveral on Saturday, December 16.
The ship’s master, Captain Paolo Severini, immediately altered the ship’s course to search for the craft. At the time of the rescue, the 181,808-gross-ton cruise ship – then the newest and largest vessel in the Carnival fleet – was sailing north of Cuba in the Florida Strait as part of a 7-night Western Caribbean itinerary, returning to Port Canaveral. The ship was also working to keep ahead of severe weather that would eventually develop into the first named storm of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season. The ship’s officers spotted the six men on a life raft, conducted a successful rescue, and notified Coast Guard authorities in the Dominican Republic about the missing crew members. In January, Celebrity Cruise captain Kate McCue posted a video on social media explaining how crew maneuver giant cruise ships to pull up alongside smaller vessels in rough conditions. The Carnival Mardi Gras was en route from Florida to Aruba for an eight-day Caribbean sailing when it received a call from the US Coast Guard requesting the cruise ship to assist the vessel in distress, the spokesperson said.
Carnival Vista‘s officers spotted the life raft and went into action to bring the six men onto the cruise ship. Their condition is unknown, but they will undoubtedly be given food, water, and medical care as necessary. The boaters were found by crew members of the Carnival Jubilee cruise ship, according to a Monday news release from the cruise line. The men’s small cargo vessel had capsized overnight and another six who were on the boat were on another life raft — which was later located and rescued by the Coast Guard.
In March, a body was recovered after a man jumped overboard from Carnival Horizon, and the Coast Guard suspended a search for a man who jumped overboard from the line's Mardi Gras ship in April. An aircrew lifted the man onto a helicopter and took him to the New Orleans Lakefront Airport, where emergency medical services were waiting. Under the leadership of Captain Paolo Severini, Carnival Vista altered its course upon receiving the emergency alert from an onboard monitoring system. "He told me to hold on to this life vest, and I was just thinking 'Thank you, you were like a guardian angel coming down for me,'" he said. "At that time, I thought, how much longer am I going to have to be out here," he said.

The cruise ship also learned that six additional crew members were still missing, and alerted Coast Guard officials in the Dominican Republic for assistance. Carnival Cruise Line Captain Niccolo De Ranieri accepted the Cruise Ship Humanitarian Assistance Award during the Association for Rescue at Sea (AFRAS) annual awards ceremony on Tuesday evening. The award was presented in recognition of the ship’s outstanding rescue of 16 migrants in distress early on the morning of June 3, 2022.
In these instances, cruise ship may still offer emergency supplies, and they will report the encounters to the appropriate authorities. In late October, P&O Cruises’ Iona was instrumental in search and rescue efforts in the North Sea after two cargo vessels collided, with one vessel sinking. Earlier in October, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Breakaway helped rescue hundreds of immigrants near Greece, and P&O Cruises Australia’s Pacific Explorer rescued a stranded mariner on October 6 near Vanuatu.
